UK THEATRENET
Review by Amy Woolford

IT’S A REAL SCREAM

"...Camp Horror is a cleverly funny, multi layered parody of the teen horror movie......This isn't just a play within a play, it's a play within a play within a play, all nicely tied up with easy to recognise characters...

...a collection of stay in your head songs that weave the story along its twisted, creepy road...

...So, to the story; take the teen horror recipe, a group of teenagers including the geek, the cheerleader, the jock, the disturbed teen and the joker, put them in a scary place i.e. a deserted island, invent a killer with a deformity, in this case a stutter, and throw them all together in a situation they can't get out of, in this case a raging storm that brings the bridges down and cuts off the telephone lines.

Led by their teacher, Mr Reynolds, the group rehearse their school musical, a teen horror, but real life begins to mirror the play.

All the elements were there, the clichés, "Wait here, I'll be right back", the characters, the situations, "Oh no, the lights have gone out, the bridge is down and we'll have to go down to the dark cellar to find the only phone", some pretty funny lyrics and a set that almost incorporates the audience.

The Heather Brothers have thought of everything, Bob Carlton has brought the package together with some really talented actor- musicians, the audience are kept in suspense until the last scecne and the twist at the end isn't just a twist, it's a twist within a twist.

Camp Horror is as camp as a horror can be. ..."

The Stage
Published Thursday 27 May 2010 at 11:09 by Mary Redman

"...The best way to describe this new musical is that it could be the bastard offspring of High School Musical and The Rocky Horror Show..."

"...Containing every cliched line of dialogue and time-worn scary happening from every horror teen flick in existence and songs that scrape the bottom of the musical barrel, it’s great fun..."

WHAT'S ON STAGE
Date Reviewed: 24 May 2010

"...The dialogue is witty with sly references to both British and American popular culture..."

"...The rock'n'roll influenced score fits the theme and also drops in its own references…"

THE PUBLIC REVIEWS

The multi-layered plot has a High School drama class putting on a musical about an “anonymous summer camp”, bossed around by “ineffectual adult” Mr Reynolds. Eventually even the blondest among them realises that life is mirroring art, and the derelict playhouse on a island is just as spooky, just as isolated, as Camp Horror in the story. And, inevitably, the youngsters will be picked off one by one by the blood-crazed serial killer in their midst. Who is the maniac ? What are his motives ? Who gets to sing a solo before they die ?

To reveal more would spoil the fun, but the final number is entitled Twist, and there is a dénouement worthy of Christie (Agatha, not the serial killer) as well as a comedy coda to send us out with a smile on our ashen faces. Because despite the fooling, the poking fun and the parody there were real spine-chilling moments, too, mostly involving the psychic Leanne.

The fourteen musical numbers catch the style nicely.

Camp Horror is a potent brew, blending Glee, Grease and High School Musical with Scream and Scary Movie. It deserves to be another Heather Brothers hit ...
